Artisans in Bangladesh have come to refer to jute as the ‘Gold of Bengal’ for its versatile use and durability. Produced using an intensive, yet low-impact process, artisans separate and dry fibers to create braids. Artisans put them through a handloom to make the fabric-like pieces which are woven into baskets. These artisans use heritage crafting techniques and skills passed down from one generation of women to the next. KORISSA advocates for their artisans to ensure they receive living wages and provided education and health care opportunities.
